The GWDG is seeking a
Quantum Software Engineer (m/f/d)
to join an interdisciplinary team of HPC experts in the working group “Computing” (AG C), full-time (39 hours perweek), remunerated in accordance with TVöD E 13. The position is tied to the GWDG QC project’s runtime running tillOctober 2029. The successful candidate is expected to contribute in developing GWDG’s QC ecosystem (seeresponsibilities listed below). The GWDG handles sensitive data, and in such cases, it is important that the code ishuman-verified for any security concerns. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to do such a verification withoutAI assistance in the interview.
The Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) is the university computing centerfor the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and a computing and IT competence center for the Max Planck Society.The provision of high-performance HPC systems has been one of its tasks for over 40 years. In 2020, the Universityof Göttingen / GWDG was accepted as one of eight computing centers (NHR-Nord@Göttingen) in the National High-Performance Computing (NHR) network. The GWDG also operates the national AI service center KISSKI and is apartner in the EU AI Factory HammerHAI. Furthermore, the GWDG operates HPC resources for the GermanAerospace Center (DLR). As a national supercomputing center, the GWDG provides technical support to researchersand students from various scientific domains, including digital humanities, life science, earth system science, andengineering. We also participate in both national and international research projects. In the field of quantumcomputing, the GWDG also runs the QUICS project, providing SMEs with access to quantum computing resources.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates to join the QC team at the GWDG focused on anomaly detection forindustry applications. The goal is to build a platform for such use cases based on existing stacks, giving companies atool for quantum anomaly detection.
The GWDG together with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Campus Institute Data Science(CIDAS) of the University of Göttingen provides a stimulating research environment in Scientific Computing, with anopportunity to conduct research in the intersection of applied computer science, High-Performance Computing,Quantum Computing, and AI.
Responsibilities
Focus:
Implementing a containerized FullStaQD instance as a reference implementation for the entire projectlandscape. This requires a high level of competence in software architecture and quality management. The developermust:
Implement a modular, scalable infrastructure
Establish CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks
Handle heterogeneous APIs
Integrate HPC scheduler systems (e.g., SLURM)
Adhere to data protection and security standards (DSGVO-compliant encryption)
Requirements
PhD and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, or a related field, combined with demonstrableindustry or research experience
Proven coding experience (without AI assistance): scope, functions, variables, classes, array methods, etc.
Experience in software architecture and quality management for containerized systems
Experience handling heterogeneous APIs and integrating HPC scheduler systems (e.g., SLURM)
Knowledge in QC (quantum computing) job characteristics and resource requirements, and familiarity withcompiler/transpiler pipelines
Knowledge of encryption and data protection standards
Excellent teamwork and communication skills
Fluent English (spoken and written)

Desirable

Experience with platform development, especially using Django
Familiarity with HPC scheduler systems (e.g., SLURM) in a web-facing application context
Experience with Slurm-native middleware or API-gateway architectures (e.g., similar to GWDG’s SAIA)
Knowledge of DSGVO/GDPR-compliant data handling and encryption in production systems
German B2 or higher
